Autumn Nocturne

If it’s not love, it’s a lesson— the heart of Autumn Nocturne. Every song is a chance to feel deeply, to learn something true, and to keep moving forward with more honesty and grace.

Autumn Nocturne is built around a simple idea — to explore the emotional landscape of the season through a collection of timeless standards, interpreted as a true ensemble. Rather than featuring the vocal as a separate lead voice, Billie Eidson performs as an integral part of a quartet — fully engaged in the musical interaction with Greg Goebel (piano and arrangements), Phil Baker (bass), and Todd Strait (drums). The intention was for every track to feel like a shared musical exchange.

From the opening title track, chosen for its expressive harmonic structure and romantic tone, the quartet leans into the song’s haunting beauty with a quiet, spacious feel. Greg’s arranging sensibility — lyrical, understated, and full of subtle color — sets the tone for the entire album and opens up room for Phil’s melodic bass work and Todd’s gentle rhythmic touch, while Billie’s voice blends into the texture as another instrument rather than a featured soloist.

That approach carries through Autumn Leaves and Autumn Serenade, where the group’s balance of space and interplay allows each phrase to breathe and each harmony to unfold naturally. On Make Me Rainbows, Greg’s arrangement was designed with Todd’s rhythmic sensitivity in mind — creating a setting where the lyricism of the melody sits comfortably inside the quartet’s understated groove.

Songs such as September Song, Maybe September, and Early Autumn lie at the emotional center of the album — tunes built around nostalgia, longing, and the quiet beauty of impermanence. Here, the quartet’s open and intuitive approach brings a fresh light to the melodies without losing their timeless character.

Autumn in New York leans into the contrast between romance and solitude that sits at the heart of the lyric, letting the harmony unfold gently across Phil’s lyrical bass lines and Todd’s subtle support while Billie’s vocal line weaves naturally through the trio’s textures. September in the Rain closes the album with a relaxed, open swing — a warmer final note that offers a sense of resolution after the deeper introspection that runs through the set.

Special thanks to Randy Porter of Heavywood Studio who engineered the recording sessions with care and precision, and to Dana White, of Specialized Mastering, whose mastering brought clarity and warmth to the final mix.

More than anything, Autumn Nocturne is meant to feel like an evening spent in good company — reflective, intimate, and open enough to allow the listener to bring their own feelings to the music.
